A big part about advocacy is getting to your states capitol and connecting with legislatures. Going to your states capitol and having conversations with your legislators is important when trying to influence their decisions. We suggest that for at least two days while your states' legislature is in session, that you visit the capitol and talk to legislators. However, sometimes talking to legislators can be difficult especially if they have a completely differing views than you. Nonetheless it's important and connecting to all legislators on both sides of the party line is not only valuable in your advocacy efforts but serves as a catalyst for respectful discourse and reducing polarization. Yet it can still be difficult, so here are some tips for you to respectfully and intentionally communicate with legislators!
Tips for Talking to Legislators and Government Officials
1. Be Respectful
When interacting with a legislator be polite and professional. This is a basic rule that applies to all your interactions. By being polite and professional you are able to have a respectful and meaningful conversation. Even if a legislator or government official uses passive aggressive statements keep your composure and approach the situation with respect. However, if you believe that being in the presence of that legislator posses a danger to your wellbeing then exit the situation.

2. Assert your credibility
When talking to legislators it important to communicate to them why you are doing what you are doing. Tell them why you care and why you are here. Establish why you are a credible person to be talking to regarding an issue, Ffor example, being a member of your schools Amplified club,.

3. Build a Connection
You are their constituent and as legislators they are suppose to represent you and your community. By approaching them with light heartedness and building a connection based on random similarities such as a shared love of art or jazz music you are fostering a connection between you and your legislator. This helps to open their mind to whatever you have to say regarding your advocacy goals.

4. Highlight the Human Impacts
By highlight the human impacts of your topic of discussion you encourage the legislator to think beyond party lines by highlighting that whatever issue you are trying to address impacts ALL people no matter political affiliation.

5. Highlight the Economic Impacts
Highlighting the economic impacts of a situation can help government officials put the issue into perspective. If you don't think acknowledging the human impacts of an issue is selling it to them then acknowledge the economic impacts. Since economics is a major part in decision making and is distinctly quantifiable it may help them understand why the issue you are bringing up is so important to address.

6. Talk in Groups
Try not to talk to legislators alone. Although you can do what you're comfortable with we suggest talking to legislators in pairs or groups. This ensures you have someone thier to help talk to the individual and allows you to support each other throughout your endeavors. Talking in pairs or in a group can also make the process a little easier!
