Beyond the Hill

Maintaining Connections

Advocacy doesn't just happen on the hill but in your communities. Even when you aren't meeting with representatives don't hesitate to send them an email letting them know who you are and what your goals are. Emailing your legislators and any person of interest on a government level, can show initiative and help build a lasting connection that will be beneficial when trying to reach your advocacy goal. Before and after visiting a government official stay in contact with them. Also, express your gratitude for being able to meet with them and promote your goal. Staying connected with legislators and forming long lasting relationships is key to getting your advocacy goals accomplished. Here is a template you can use when sending emails!

Op-eds

Newspaper opinion articles, op-eds, can be a powerful tool for reaching policymakers and the public. Op-eds  can be used strategically in order to further the goals of an organization or non-profit engaging in legislative advocacy. Below is a guide by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers on how to write op-eds. Feel free to publish your op-ed with Amplified in addition to other publishing centers.

Education

Education can be a powerful catalyst for change. Beyond advocacy holding workshops, events, and campaigns that address or assist you in addressing your topics. For example if you want to promote equity within the education system, hold a workshop at your school for disadvantaged youth on the importance of education and ask your peers to give their input. If legislators don't address issues, take it upon yourself to use workshops, education, and programs with the intent of filling those gaps.
